ISB Dragons Creche

ISB - International School of Beijing

The Dragon Creche at the International School of Beijing transforms an unused balcony into a compact nursery for infants and toddlers of the school’s staff. Designed to support teacher mothers returning to work, the space accommodates feeding, resting, and short visits throughout the day. The layout unfolds as a sequence of zones, from an entrance with stroller parking and storage, to a pantry, and into a central play area. More private spaces for nursing and sleeping are arranged along the sides, defined by arches and curtains rather than fixed partitions. The project is built around the idea of a forest inhabited by the school’s dragon. A large illustrated felt wall defines the main space, depicting a daytime forest, while an elevated platform shifts into a darker, night setting for rest. The space is not only designed, but illustrated, with layered materials that also function as a tactile sensory environment. A central skylight introduces soft, diffused light, complemented by suspended paper lanterns that create a calm and slightly magical atmosphere. Soft materials, padded flooring, and integrated elements support comfort, safety, and early movement. Part of a broader strategy to reclaim underused areas within the school, the Dragon Creche demonstrates how small, leftover spaces can be transformed into environments that support everyday life.
